Flat feet (also called pes planus/fallen arches) is a postural deformity in which there is a collapse of the foot arches, with the entire sole of the foot coming into complete or near-complete contact with the ground. Some individuals about 20-30% have an arch that simply never develops in one foot (unilaterally) or both feet(bilaterally). It can develop as an abnormality in childhood where the foot’s arch never forms, which can also be present at birth and its often hereditary, allowing the entire soles of the feet to touch the floor when you stand up. In some cases, flat feet develops after an injury/from the simple wear and tear stresses of age, sometime contributing to problems in your ankles and knees causing alteration of alignment of the legs. It can also cause a weakened posture and discomfort through the hips and lower backs.
